Bruno Pizzul, icon of Italian sports journalism, passes away

Bruno Pizzul, an icon of Italian sports journalism, died on Wednesday morning in a Gorizia hospital at the age of 86.

A former footballer whose career was cut short by injury, Pizzul, who had a law degree, started working for state broadcaster RAI, until he became famous as an Italian football analyst from 1969-2002, and then he went on to work as a television analyst and, in recent years, as a writer for the local daily Friuli Messaggero Veneto.

In particular, Pizzul was the voice that commented on the incredible nights of the 1990 World Cup.

For 16 years, from 1986 to 2002, he was RAI's broadcaster for Italian games, including five World Cups. The last match he hosted was between Italy and Slovenia on 21 August 2002.
