From ERTV to the Media Agency, Rama's initiatives to increase media "control"

From ERTV to the Media Agency, Rama's initiatives to increase media
Prime Minister Edi Rama

One of the first decisions of the "Rama 3" government was the creation of the Media and Information Agency, a structure that also aims to monitor the media.

The government decision states that the Agency: "Monitors media publications and mass media, to identify the perception and attitude of the public towards the activity of state administration institutions . "

Rama's decision has met with opposition and reactions with the argument that he is trying to strengthen propaganda and media control.

But this is not the prime minister's only initiative to monitor the media. In 2017, when he won his second term, Rama introduced ERTV, his private television.

Recall that in 2018, ERTV started broadcasting a news edition every Sunday, which provided a weekly summary of all major government activities.

ERTV has become a point of reference for the media, as Rama covers many activities with his television.

While in function of the activity of the government is also the Albanian Telegraphic Agency, or online sites like kryeministria.al. Apparently these were not enough for Rama, but create a structure that will depend on him.

His desire to have wider control in the media was also proven with the anti-defamation package. We recall the initiative of the Socialists to give extended powers to the Audio-Visual Media Authority and the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority to impose fines and close electronic portals, when, according to them, they would "slander and violate the dignity of the individual."

It is worth mentioning that the new structure, the Agency for Media and Information will be financed from the State Budget, as well as ATSH and ART. This structure has been described as a "propaganda ministry". The last time Albania had a "Minister of Information" was in 1999.
