The investigation into toxic waste in the Port of Durrës begins. Where are

The Durrës Prosecutor's Office has started investigations related to a shipment of dangerous waste that was sent to Thailand. VNA learns that the referral was made by the Customs Directorate and in advance the charge is for “ smuggling of goods. dangerous.

Vna also last night reported on a shipment of dangerous goods that left and returned to the Port of Durrës. “Bloomberg” was the first to reflect on the case after complaints made by the international environmental protection organization while the Maersk company has decided to return the two ships believed to be loaded with about 800 tons of industrial waste from Albania.

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment still has no official reaction to this delicate issue. It is now unclear whether 800 tons of cargo are remnants of Albania or taken from other countries. The cargo may have been taken from another country, even though the origin in the papers is in Albania. Specialists in the field claim for VNA that such amounts of waste can be produced by KURUM or mining furnaces.

VNA has also learned that the company involved in the transport of hazardous waste is registered under the name “Sokolaj shpk”. The company has permission to transport hazardous waste obtained in 2022. While two years later, in 2024, it engages in the transport of 800 tons of toxic waste. This is a large amount for a company with almost no experience in this field. The company does not provide details on how it collected and packed this waste as it was only authorized for their transportation. On the company's official website, in the relevant column, there is no licensed environmental expert. Although the law clearly defines that it should be one.

The fact is that 800 tons of dust from the electric oven were loaded at the port of Durrës in July and had Thailand as their final destination. Dust from the ovens, which requires treatment, it is a hazardous waste product that usually comes from recycling used iron and contains toxic metal oxides such as cadmium and chromium, which are harmful to health and the environment.

Authorities in Thailand and Singapore have officially announced that they will not accept shipments of hazardous waste sent from Albania. The loaded ships at the Port of Durrës have turned off the tracking devices while they are officially on the way back to Albania./VNA.al
