"Limited progress", today is presented the progress report for Albania

Today in the European Commission will be presented the progress report for Albania and the countries aspiring to integration. It will be Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi who will present to MEPs the progress of reforms and the conditions he must meet to join the EU.

The enlargement package, which includes annual progress reports for countries in the process, is expected to see only limited progress by these countries towards meeting the criteria for integration into the European Union.

The presentation of the report paves the way for the stage of proposals for amendments by MEPs. The European Commission has stated that Albania has met the conditions and that it will hold the intergovernmental conference within the year, but Bulgaria's veto has "extinguished" hopes.

In the draft reports that will be approved today will be the recommendation for visa liberalization for Kosovo, an issue that is in the hands of the EU Council where no compromise has been reached between member states to take this decision.

Albania and Northern Macedonia were not given a date for the first intergovernmental conference with the EU, not even at the last meeting. The reason for this was Bulgaria's veto on Northern Macedonia, which hindered the process for Albania as well, as many EU countries do not want the process for both countries to run in parallel.

Albania has been denied talks several times. We recall that Albania has the status of a candidate country since 2014 and for seven years has not been able to start membership talks. The EU has stated that it is not complete without the Western Balkans and the prospect of integration of this region has been agreed since 2003 at the Thessaloniki Summit.
