A new study, published in "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences", has highlighted an interesting connection between birth order and intelligence quotient (IQ).
According to the research, based on data collected from more than 20,000 individuals, firstborns have a slightly higher IQ than their younger siblings, although the difference is small.
Researchers at the University of Leipzig have analyzed the results of intelligence and personality tests of participants from Germany, Great Britain and the United States. They concluded that IQ drops by about 1.5% for each child born after the first child. This shows that birth order can have a small but measurable effect on the intelligence of individuals.
However, the researchers emphasize that these changes are small and are not sufficient to reach strong conclusions about the influence of birth order on personality and intellectual abilities. Some theories suggest that younger children may receive less attention from parents, while older children may develop stronger skills to guide their younger siblings, a process that may stimulate intelligence development.
A previous study from the University of Essex has also suggested that firstborns are more ambitious and have more chances to succeed in life, especially if they are female. This study analyzed 3,552 individuals and showed that older children are often more focused and successful in their careers.
Despite these findings, scientists point out that other factors, such as relationships with parents and siblings, may influence individuals' achievements more than birth order.
