Opposition-held municipalities cancel local elections preparations

Over 25 Municipalities led by opposition Mayors have asked the local Commissions of Election Administration Zones (CEAZs) to vacate their premises, referring to the presidential decree canceling the date of the local government elections.

This led to reactions from the Central Election Commission (CEC) and Prime Minister Edi Rama, who warned the opposition Mayors not to violate the electoral law by hampering the preparations.

The CEC also warned them of criminal sanctions for blocking the elections preparations. CEC Chair Klement Zguri said that the CEC’s reaction had not been authorized by him, as he fully abided by the said presidential decree.
