Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Ankara University (AU) Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Serhat Birengel says that legionella bacteria transmitted through air conditioners can cause pneumonia.

Birengel, in a statement to Anadolu, spoke about the health problems that may arise due to exposure to air conditioning and the increase in infectious diseases during the summer months.

Drawing attention to the increased use of air conditioners during the summer months, Birengel said that sudden shifts from heat to cold can negatively affect the immune system.

"As temperatures rise due to the season, both fluid consumption and the use of air conditioners can cause weakness in the body due to the differences between heat and cold. Legionella bacteria transmitted through air conditioners can cause pneumonia. As the body weakens, it becomes easier for other respiratory viruses to take hold," he warned, adding that one should not stand in front of the air conditioner, especially when one is sweating.

- "The ideal temperature for air conditioning in work environments is 18-21 degrees"

The Turkish doctor also spoke about the use of air conditioning in workplaces. "The ideal temperature for air conditioning in workplaces is 18-21 degrees. If you sit near the air conditioning, sudden temperature changes can cause swelling of the sinus mucosa and sinusitis in those with allergies. This also applies to car air conditioners; it is useful to protect yourself from sudden temperature changes," he said.

He provided information about the main causes of summer infections. "Consuming cold drinks in particular can have negative effects on the gastrointestinal system, while drinks prepared in unhygienic environments or drinking water from unpackaged sources can cause intestinal infections," said Birengel./ AA.
