Mayor bites gold medal, Olympic Committee makes decision on Japanese athlete

An Olympic athlete will receive a new gold medal from the Olympic Committee, after the former was bitten by the city mayor.

According to BBC News , the mayor of the Japanese city Takashi Kawamura, caused outrage on social media when he lowered his mask and bit the gold medal of the athlete Miu Goto.  

Social media users have considered it more as an unhygienic act and disrespect to the athlete.

"In addition to showing disrespect for athletes, he bit him even though athletes were putting medals themselves or their teammates during medal ceremonies as part of infection prevention measures. Sorry, I can not understand it," he wrote. on Twitter the Japanese silver medalist, Yuki Ota.

While the mayor apologized for his actions, which prompted nearly 7,000 complaints against local authorities.

"I forgot my position as mayor of Nagoya and acted in an extremely inappropriate way," he said, adding that he wanted to pay for a substitute medal.

The Olympic Committee decided to replace the first medal with a new gold medal covering all expenses.
