Ukraine-Russia war/ DW: Mutual accusations of violating the ceasefire

Despite the 30-hour ceasefire for Easter, announced by Russian President Putin, Ukraine and Russia accused each other of constant attacks.

Despite the Easter ceasefire announced by Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski wrote on Platform X that there was continuous shelling and fighting from the Russian side on Sunday morning. The Armed Forces of Ukraine reported 59 grenade strikes by the Russian side as well as five attempted attacks along the front line. It is also reported that Russia is using drones again.

Zelenski: Moscow's words cannot be trusted

"We know very well how Moscow manipulates and we are prepared for anything," said President Zelenski. "We will respond appropriately to any Russian strike" - said Zelenksi, according to whom Moscow's words cannot be trusted. However, the Ukrainian president admitted: "In some areas the situation has calmed down."

'30 days would give peace a chance'

The Ukrainian president simultaneously stated that Ukraine is ready to respect the ceasefire. "If Russia is now suddenly ready to truly commit to a complete and unconditional silence (of weapons), Ukraine will act accordingly," Zelenski wrote in X. He also proposed extending the ceasefire beyond Easter Sunday. "30 days would give peace a chance," Zelenski wrote.

For millions of Ukrainians, Easter is "one of the most important holidays", Zelenski added in his video message on the occasion of Easter. "And millions of Ukrainians will go to church," he added. But since 2022, Russia has "destroyed or damaged more than 600 churches and places of worship."

Russia accuses Ukraine of violating the ceasefire

On the other hand, Russia accused the Ukrainian armed forces of violating the ceasefire and continuing attacks, among others in the Donetsk region. During Sunday night there were dozens of drone strikes by the Ukrainian side, but the attacks were repelled, the Russian Defense Ministry said. "As a result, there are dead and injured among the civilian population and damage to civilian buildings," the ministry said in a statement./DW
