Moldova: Attacks in Transnistrian region attempt to escalate tensions

Moldovan President Maia Sandu warned on Tuesday that a series of attacks in the Russian-backed separatist region of Transnistria are an attempt to escalate tensions. She blamed what she called pro-war factions within the territory.

Speaking at a news conference after an urgent meeting of the Moldovan Security Council, President Sandu said she had no plans to hold talks with the Kremlin over the past 24 hours, which included an attack on the Transnistrian Interior Ministry. and the destruction of two antennas, which enabled the transmission of Russian radio.

Mostly after Russia's attack on Ukraine, Moldovan authorities have been sensitive to any signals of rising tensions in Transnistria, a Moscow-backed territory that has declared secession from Moldova but has not been recognized. Transnistria is located on the southwestern border of Ukraine.

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has deployed troops permanently based in Transnistria. Kiev fears the region could be used as a starting point for new attacks on Ukraine.

The Russian news agency TASS reported that the Transnistrian Security Council announced a terrorist attack on a military unit near the city of Tiraspol. But gave no further details.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the news was a cause for serious concern and that Moscow was following developments closely./VOA
