Pope Leo XIV calls for peace: Advanced weapons are temptations we must reject

Pope Leo XIV today made a powerful call for peace in all areas affected by war, during a general audience held on Wednesday at the Vatican.

“The heart of the Church is torn by the cries that rise from the war fronts, especially from Ukraine, Iran, Israel and Gaza.”

The Pope went on to emphasize that war must not become an acceptable reality:

"We should not get used to war. On the contrary, we should reject, as a temptation, powerful and more advanced weapons."

Citing his predecessors, he appealed to world leaders to act in the spirit of peace and international law:

"In the name of human dignity and international law, I remind those responsible – as Pope Francis said – that war is always a loss. And that, as Pope Pius XII said, with peace we lose nothing, while with war we can lose everything."

The Pope's call comes at a time when several regions of the world are in a dangerous escalation of conflicts and humanitarian crises are deepening day by day.
