Hell in the Gjadri camp, 45 attempted injuries and violent protests

An article published by the Italian newspaper " Domani " has shed light on a reality at the repatriation center in Gjadra, Albania - a structure built by the Italian agreement to house rejected migrants.

According to the report, since its inception, at least 45 episodes of self-harm, protests, and suicide attempts have been recorded. A shocking figure that casts a heavy shadow over the humanity of this migration policy.

The migrants detained at this center, which according to unofficial estimates is around 80 people per month, live in such isolated conditions that they have lost track of time – their first question to visitors is always “What day is it?” and “What time is it?”.

In the absence of any contact with the outside world – no cell phones, no watches, no working televisions – detainees experience a profound disconnect from reality. Furthermore, the use of psychotropic drugs has become a means to calm or lull their emotional state, extinguishing any sense of control over their personal lives.

What Domani describes is a sterile, clean, but cold and inhumane structure – a modern prison where suffering does not scream out loud, but dissolves in silence. This center, unlike Italian prisons that face overcrowding and open protests, offers a silent and controlled reality, where the lack of freedom is not only physical, but also mental.

According to the prestigious Italian newspaper, the most serious issue is the total lack of transparency. Official data does not exist, neither for the public nor for Italian parliamentarians who seek to visit these structures. Members of Parliament and MEPs who have attempted to exercise their right of control have faced long waits, deliberate delays and clear obstacles.

The center in Gjadra is located about an hour from Tirana, in an isolated area between the mountains and the Drin River, a place specifically designed to remain out of the eyes of the media and public opinion. Today, this structure is increasingly symbolizing not the solution to the migration crisis, but its moral failure.

This shocking report raises the alarm not only for Albania as the host country of this center, but above all for Italy and the European Union, which through such agreements are shifting the burden of humanity to the periphery, while essentially creating spaces where human dignity is silently annihilated.
