Avoid drying towels in the sun, here's how to keep them soft

Towels are items we use every day, but improper washing and drying can make them rough, uncomfortable to use, and less absorbent. One of the most common mistakes is drying towels directly in the sun, which further damages the fibers and reduces their softness.

While it may seem practical to dry towels quickly in the hot sun, high temperatures and UV rays can actually damage the fabric fibers. Prolonged exposure to sunlight strips the fabric of its natural softness, drying it out and making towels stiff to the touch. In addition, the sun can fade colors and shorten the lifespan of the material.

How to wash and dry towels properly?

To keep your towels soft, fragrant, and long-lasting, it's important to pay attention to a few key steps in washing and drying:

Too much detergent can cause residue to build up on the fabric, further adding to its stiffness. Use a moderate amount of mild detergent and avoid fabric softeners, as they reduce absorbency.

The recommended temperature for washing towels is between 40 and 60 degrees, depending on the type of material. Higher temperatures can damage the fibers, while very low temperatures do not effectively remove bacteria.

Adding a half cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle occasionally helps remove detergent residue and eliminate unpleasant odors. A tablespoon of baking soda during the wash also softens the fabric and keeps it fresh.

It is best to air dry your towels, but in the shade or in a place protected from direct sunlight. They will dry naturally without damaging the fibers. If you use a dryer, choose a lower temperature and avoid drying for too long.
