Zhulali: EU does not tolerate basic standards, membership is a political process

Integration expert and head of the Foreign Policy Department at the Democratic Party, Ilda Zhulali, has analyzed Albania's challenges towards membership in the European Union.

Invited to News24, she said that the integration process remains dynamic and influenced by political factors, but the fundamental standards of the EU have never changed.

"The accession process is political, but it is not entirely so. It has non-negotiable standards. The EU was created to unite the countries of Europe so that there is no more war – and this requires democracy, the rule of law and a functioning market economy ," Zhulali said.

According to her, although some EU enlargements have occurred for geopolitical reasons, the basic principles have never been compromised.

" The standards are not flexible. Essentially, a country must be democratic, have the ability to transform legislation and respect the rule of law," Zhulali emphasized.
