Convicted of cocaine trafficking from Colombia, the Supreme Court rejects Arbër Çekaj's appeal
The High Court has today decided to dismiss the appeal of the owner of the company "Arbi Garden", Arbër Çekaj, who was found guilty of trafficking a record amount of drugs. Çekaj was convicted of involvement in one of the largest cocaine trafficking events in the country, where 613 kilograms of cocaine were seized that were transported from Colombia through Italy, and then hidden in his warehouse in Durrës.
In 2018, drugs were found inside a banana container at the Port of Durres, while Çekaj denied any involvement in the incident. However, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison, but due to the shortened trial, he had 1/3 of his sentence reduced and will ultimately serve 14 years in prison.
This decision by the Supreme Court closes one of the biggest drug trafficking cases in Albania.
