Emigration and aging "empty" Albania, 28 thousand residents left in

The country's population is continuing its downward trend, influenced by both the decline in birth rates and emigration, with around 28.5 thousand people having left in 2025, minus those who have returned.

According to INSTAT, the population of Albania on January 1, 2026 is 2,335,930 inhabitants, decreasing by 1.16% compared to January 1, 2025.

The population decline is the result of two main demographic components:
* Natural increase, which for 2025 was positive with +1,147 more births than deaths;
* Net migration, which remained negative with -28,531.

The sex ratio at birth remained almost the same as the previous year, resulting in 107.9 males per 100 females in 2025.

Population estimates on January 1, 2026 show that only the Tirana region recorded a population increase, compared to the previous year by 0.7%.

The largest population decreases were recorded in the regions of Kukës (-2.59%) and Shkodër (-2.56%).
Tirana, Fier, Elbasan and Durrës have the highest share in the total population.

On January 1, 2026, Tirana accounts for about 32.8% of the total population, continuing to be the most populous region in the country, followed by Fier, Elbasan, and Durrës with 9.7%, 9.5%, and 9.4%, respectively.

INSTAT data also shows a continuing aging of the population. The median age (which divides the population in half) reached 45 years old at the beginning of 2026, up from 44.3 years old at the end of 2025, increasingly approaching the European average./ Monitor
