Scandal erupts in Israel/ Rama was threatened by Netanyahu for Albania's honorary consul

In 2023, Edi Rama was sitting in the courtyard of a private residence in Nev Yarak, somewhere in Central Israel, contemplating the vast expanse of the Sanilevich vineyard and winery.

The apartment and the winery next to it were the property of Sani Sanilevich, a very close friend of Edi Rama.

The Albanian Prime Minister was in Israel on a private, completely unannounced visit. But as the two close friends, Rama and Sanilevich, were chatting over a glass of wine, the conversation was suddenly interrupted by the Albanian Prime Minister's phone ringing.

"I heard you're in Israel. Come and meet me urgently in my office," the voice on the other end of the phone said. It was none other than Benjamin Netanyahu.

The episode was revealed by an investigation on Israeli television UVDA, which published Sanilevich's wiretaps about the scandal over the appointment of the Albanian consul in Israel, which turned into a fierce conflict between the two countries, even to the point of threats.

Benjamin Netanyahu sought to replace Sanilevich with a friend of his wife, Sara Netanyahu, named Nicole Raidman.

In May 2023, news broke of Raidman's appointment as Albania's honorary consul in Israel. According to Snilevitz: "They approved her appointment, scheduled a ceremony for two weeks... The Americans saw her, everyone who saw her, contacted the Albanian prime minister, said: 'Listen, you can't appoint her as consul... Don't appoint her as consul.'

The reason, apparently, is Michael Chernoy, Raidman's ex-husband, who was previously involved in a series of investigations across the globe - and the Americans are conveying the message to the Albanians that Chernoy's former partner will not be able to serve as their honorary consul in Israel.

"They canceled her appointment, she was very angry," says Sanilevich. But the amazing part of the story takes place in the Prime Minister's Office, and Sanilevich hears about it from the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, a close friend of his.

"We're sitting in my house in the vineyard... He gets a call from Bibi, surprised that Bibi knew he was in Israel, it was such a 'under the radar' secret visit, 'I heard you're in Israel, we need to meet. 'Come to me urgently at the Prime Minister's Office.'"

The Albanian prime minister gets in the car and heads to Jerusalem for a meeting with Netanyahu. "He comes back in a few hours," says Sanilevich, "Edi is shocked, I say to him, 'What happened?'

Ai (Edi) i thotë atij 'Dëgjo... Nuk mund t'ua bëj këtë amerikanëve', kështu që Bibi i thotë atij 'A po më lejon të flas unë me amerikanët?', kështu që Edi i tha atij 'Fol... Cili është problemi?'"

Të nesërmen, sipas kësaj dëshmie, Netanyahu ende po merret me këtë emërim dhe vazhdon të bëjë presion. Sanilevich: "Jemi ulur në një restorant në Tel Aviv dhe ai (Kryeministri shqiptar) merr një telefonatë nga Bibi dhe e vendos në altoparlant... E dëgjoj Bibin duke folur me Edin, kështu që ai i thotë: 'Z. Kryeministër, më pëlqeu biseda jonë dje (...) 'Kontrollova me amerikanët, gjithçka është në rregull, mund të ecni përpara' dhe ia mbyll telefonin."

Biseda me Netanyahun mbaron dhe kryeministri shqiptar i lejon vetes të shfryhet. Sanilevich: "Edi thotë... 'Çfarë është 'a mund të ecni përpara?' Çfarë është 'Kontrollova me amerikanët?' Çfarë është ai që më jep urdhra, sikur të isha një vartës i tiji... Unë nuk po e emëroj atë.'"

"Shqiptarët u ofenduan shumë"
Zyra e Netanyahut ishte e tërbuar për anulimin e emërimit, por një nga njerëzit pranë Netanyahut i lejoi vetes, me sa duket, të shkonte edhe më tej.

Snilevic: "Dhjetë ditë më vonë jam në Shqipëri. Edi më pyet: 'Më thuaj, kush është ky Topaz Luk?' Unë i them: 'Çfarë ndodhi?' Ai më tregon telefonin e tij - ai ka mesazhe urrejtjeje në whatsApp nga Topaz Luk, i cili i thotë: 'Nëse nuk e emëron Nicole Raidman si konsulle, marrëdhëniet midis vendeve kanë mbaruar'... Nuk do të ketë marrëdhënie, nuk e kupton se ku do të çojë kjo..."

Por nuk mbaron këtu: Në fillim të shtatorit 2023, Ministri i Jashtëm Eli Cohen do të shkojë për një vizitë shtetërore në Shqipëri. Një njoftim zyrtar është bërë tashmë, dhe pastaj, udhëtimi u anulua papritur.

Sanilevitz: "Unë isha tashmë në Shqipëri me delegacionin ekonomik, në mbrëmjen e vizitës Eli Cohen, por ai e anulon vizitën... Ata i thanë: 'Askush nuk shkon atje, askush nuk shkon atje!'...

Eli ma tha mua, pastaj i tha edhe Edi-t, Kryeministrit të Shqipërisë... dhe shqiptarët u ofenduan shumë."

Në fund, marrëdhëniet u kthyen në normalitet dhe me sa duket edhe Nicole Raidman u tërhoq, por dikush mund të pyesë pse njerëzit fyhen kështu në një vend mik vetëm për shkak të një miku personal dhe pse shqetësohen për këtë kur rrugët digjen këtu dhe si koha do të na vërtetojë se Nicole, në fund të fundit, ishte vetëm një iluzion.

Topaz Luk nuk e mohon se i ka dërguar mesazhe Edi Ramës, por shton: "Unë kurrë nuk kam kërcënuar asnjë person - përfshirë vendet."

Nicole Raidman responded: "The request to appoint me as honorary consul was made at the initiative of the Prime Minister of Albania, Mr. Edi Rama, and at the request of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, Ms. Olta Xhaçka. The decision not to continue the process was based solely on my personal considerations. Albania's relations with the State of Israel are excellent and are expected to continue to strengthen. This is a friendly country with Israel, which clearly supports it and has considerable business and investment potential. Out of appreciation for these relations and the personal request of senior officials in Albania, I agreed at that time to serve as honorary ambassador on their behalf. Beyond that, it is not at all clear to me how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is connected to the matter of the appointment, or how my ex-husband is connected to it. The only connection between us for the past 8 years is that we are parents of two children together. It is also worth clarifying that the position of honorary consul is a position "It's completely voluntary, which provides no real benefit except, perhaps, free parking in Tel Aviv."
