"Architecture should be born from nature", Ivanka Trump reveals details from the project in Sazan

US President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, has spoken about her project on the island of Sazan in Albania and how she discovered it during a yacht trip in the Mediterranean. 

In an interview with David Senra, she describes Sazan as an extraordinary natural space that is being transformed with care and vision, turning it into a major development project where architecture "must be born from the very nature of the island."

Excerpt from the interview: 

Now, at this point in your life, what is the most exciting part of your professional life?

In terms of my professional life in particular, I think I've reached a point where I know myself. I know what I want, I know what I'm good at. I know what excites me and where I can sustain that excitement for a long period of time, which is essential, because I've really lived a lot of different lives. So now, whatever I commit to, I can approach it with a lot of energy, but also with a lot of confidence that this is something I'm really passionate about.

The things I'm doing right now that I love, and that get me out of bed with enthusiasm every morning, are very mission-driven. Whether it's incubating companies, from for-profit businesses to nonprofits, investing in companies and founders that are right on the edge of transformation, whether it's artificial intelligence, biotechnology, neurotechnology, robotics, even space.

These are things that, for me, fuel a great deal of curiosity and give me the opportunity to learn, grow, and expand. I'm also drawn to founders who are tackling meaningful problems. What inspires me are people who are aiming for big things. I love individuals with extraordinary imaginations and big ideas. The opportunity to learn from them, to spend time with them, and to expand intellectually from them, I think is incredibly interesting.

I've also been getting back to my real estate roots, which has been a lot of fun, and I'm working on an incredible project with my husband in the Mediterranean. It's gigantic in scale.

I think that's an understatement. Can you explain? There's no electricity on the island you're building. You're building everything from scratch, right?

It's an incredibly beautiful, 1,400-hectare private island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. We were on a friend's yacht and stopped for a swim. That's actually how we found it. We swam out to the island and did a barefoot hike to the top. And we were just amazed. That place has stuck in our minds ever since.

Po përpiqemi të ndërtojmë diçka që është një manifestim i prekshëm i kësaj ideje, gjë që kërkon shumë vizion dhe bashkëpunimin e disa prej mjeshtërve më të mëdhenj që ekzistojnë.

Sapo isha atje duke ecur nëpër tokë, thjesht duke u përpjekur ta përjetoja dhe ta ndjeja atë vend, së bashku me disa nga arkitektët më të mëdhenj të gjallë të kohës sonë, mjeshtër të vërtetë të zanatit të tyre. Njerëz me integritet kaq absolut, sa që nuk do të ketë asnjë kompromis.

Dhe kjo është diçka që ne duam ta krijojmë atje. Prandaj jemi shumë të emocionuar.

Çfarë do të thotë kjo? Njerëz me integritet kaq të plotë sa nuk bëjnë kompromis? Keni parasysh vizionin e tyre?

Kur punon me artistë të vërtetë, pavarësisht mediumit të tyre, qoftë piktura, pasuritë e paluajtshme apo muzika, ata nuk bëjnë kompromis. Integriteti i tyre është i saktë dhe absolut, dhe ata do ta shtyjnë veten në maksimum. Do të shtyjnë edhe të gjithë ata që i rrethojnë.

Ka rreth gjashtë njerëz jashtë kamerës që mund ta konfirmojnë se unë i bezdis të gjithë dhe i çmend plotësisht…

Por pikërisht kështu arrin te diçka e veçantë. Dhe një pjesë e procesit është ai tensioni krijues kur punon me një arkitekt. Sepse, përveç rasteve kur po ndërtojnë një monument, ata po krijojnë një hapësirë me të cilën njerëzit duhet të ndërveprojnë, jo thjesht ta vëzhgojnë si një pikturë.

Njerëzit duhet të jetojnë në të. Duhet të martohen në të. Nëse është hotel, ai bëhet shtëpia e tyre. Prandaj ekzistojnë disa elemente funksionale. Për mua, nuk ka asgjë më të shëmtuar sesa një hapësirë e bukur, por jofunksionale. Për mua, ajo nuk është një kryevepër, sepse nuk është menduar deri në fund.

Kur mund të kombinosh diçka që është arkitektonikisht jashtëzakonisht domethënëse, e bukur dhe e qëllimshme me një hapësirë shumë funksionale, atëherë ke arritur diçka të veçantë.

Një nga gjërat që dua te pasuritë e paluajtshme është se ato janë të prekshme në një botë ku gjithnjë e më shumë gjëra nuk janë. Ti sheh rezultatin e viteve të tëra pune. Dhe për të sjellë në jetë një projekt, duhen vite, ndonjëherë më shumë se një dekadë.

It must also be a good feeling, because many of the buildings you've been involved in, including this new project, you know will outlive you. Building something that you know will outlast your lifetime.

One of the things I love most is that I've worked on so many incredible projects. The Old Post Office in Washington, DC, was my favorite project. We bought that wonderful building, built in the 1890s, and restored it with a lot of care and love.

We made it useful for modern life. It was basically a dilapidated post office, and now it's a thriving urban hotel. It was an incredible project that took a long time to complete, and it's just one example.

But what I want most is not just to see the result, although that is wonderful, nor to experience it while remembering every decision you made during the design and development process.

What I love most is when people stop me and tell me stories about a child being baptized in one of the halls, their daughter's wedding, or some experience that was a historic moment in their life. Someone has chosen for that important moment to happen in a space that I have conceived together with many other talented people.

To me, that's something really beautiful. There's something very unique and special about being a builder. You're building the stage where people's lives unfold and their dreams come true.

And that's exactly what we're going to do with this project, Sazan.
