The winner of the competition for the redevelopment of the Congress Palace is “Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd” and Julian Beqiri + “Marsela Demaj” + “Michel Desvigne (MDP)” + “Gentian Shkurti” + “SUEB INDUSTRIES sh.pk” + “The Space Factory Ltd” + “KLAR” sh.pk
During the presentation held this Tuesday morning, representatives of the winning team explained the project, which highlighted minimal intervention in the existing project and brings urban life closer to the public. “We want to intervene in a minimalist way in the Congress Palace. This building, for the time it was built, was innovative and carries history,” the architects said. The concept is based on four or five main interventions, surrounding the building with a green space that functions as the “waiting room” of the complex. The project includes the creation of a new public square, the reorganization of pedestrian circulation, and an atrium that gradually descends to the lower levels, creating the effect of an urban forest.

“The new green square that will run down step by step will look like a forest and a space that is used by everyone,” the designers said. Inside the building, acoustic improvements are proposed, the roof is replaced with a steel structure and six new conference rooms with a total capacity of about 1,600 people are created. The project also includes a multifunctional tower with offices and a hotel.

The jury called on the winners to take into account the height of the tower and the upper part to improve public spaces. In third place, according to the jury, were “Studio GANG” + “Gener 2” sh.pk + “AD-STAR sh.pk” + “Digi Print” + “Besart Papa” + “Rudina Papavasili”, while in second place were “MVRDV BV” + “AEI Progetti Srl” + “IRI sh.pk” + “Jason Bruges Studio Ltd” + “Charcoalblue International Ltd” + “Arup Engineering Trading as Ove Arup & Partners Ireland Ltd” + “Bami Holding” sh.pk Monitor.al
