Negotiations could unblock Ukraine's bid for EU membership

Negotiations could unblock Ukraine's bid for EU membership

In addition to recent military progress, Ukraine's efforts to join the European Union have also been supported by the recent elections in Hungary.

The country's new prime minister offered today to clarify issues related to the country's Hungarian minority, which he considers an obstacle to advancing Ukraine's application.

Peter Magyar said he is optimistic that the issue can be resolved and that he will meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy next week if technical negotiations are successful.

"So far, the negotiations are progressing very encouragingly and we hope that they will be concluded at a technical level this week," he added.
Under Magyar's predecessor, Viktor Orban, Hungary had vetoed both new EU funds for Ukraine and the opening of the first negotiating chapter in the accession talks.

Magyar has conditioned his consent on the rights of 150,000 ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine to use their native language.
