Explosions at oil terminal, footage from the attack in St. Petersburg

Loud explosions, flames and huge plumes of black smoke have been seen over St. Petersburg after a Ukrainian drone attack hit an oil terminal in the city. Footage posted by residents on social media shows the moments of the attack, which took place on the opening day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia's most important economic event.

The Gulf of Finland Oil Terminal, part of the Grand Port of St. Petersburg, is one of Russia's largest fuel storage and export hubs. The facility processes and transports petroleum products via waterways, railways and highways, with an estimated capacity of about 12.5 million tons per year.

The attack coincided with the start of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia's most important economic event, which President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend.

The governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, stated that 50 drones were shot down in the region during the early morning hours, but did not provide details about the damage caused by the fire at the oil terminal.

The consequences of the attack were also felt in air transport. According to Russian state media, operations were disrupted at Pulkovo airport, with nearly 30 flights delayed for more than two hours and nine others diverted to other airports.
