FIFA has released the names of the 48 national teams participating in the World Cup, featuring a total of 1,248 players, a record number for the biggest international football tournament.

The World Cup, which is being held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, will feature a great mix of experience and newcomers. According to FIFA data, 357 players have been to the World Cup at least once before, while 891 players will experience the tournament for the first time.

Among the most famous names are Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) and Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who are expected to appear in the World Cup for the sixth time, setting a record.

The oldest player on the published lists is Scotland's Craig Gordon, at 43 years and 162 days, while the youngest is Mexico's Gilberto Mora, at 17 years and 240 days. In total, seven players are 40 years or older.

This edition will also feature debutants: Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan will appear in the World Cup for the first time.

According to FIFA regulations, changes to the final player lists are only allowed in cases of serious injury or illness, and only up to 24 hours before the team's first match.
