The heat wave does not spare Spain, 101 people lost their lives in May alone

Spain has recorded a record number of deaths linked to high temperatures during the month of May, signaling a worsening impact of heatwaves even before the official start of the summer season.

According to data from the MoMo mortality monitoring system, 101 heat-related deaths were recorded during May, the highest level ever recorded for this month since 2015.

The figure is 3.6 times higher than the average number of fatalities recorded in May over the last decade and is raising concerns about the increasingly early effects of extreme temperatures.

Spanish Health Minister Mónica García said the risk is not only related to rising temperatures, but also to the fact that heat waves are appearing earlier than usual.

"The problem is no longer just that it's hotter, but that the heat is coming earlier and earlier and our bodies are not yet adapted," she said during the presentation of the 2026 National Plan for Preventing the Health Effects of Extreme Temperatures.

According to the Ministry of Health, the risk of mortality increases from 9.1% to 10.7% for every degree that the temperature exceeds the limit considered dangerous to health.

Long-term data also shows the severe impact of heat in Spain. From 2015 to 2025, the MoMo system estimates that 27,564 people have lost their lives as a result of high temperatures. The deadliest year remains 2022 with 4,789 fatalities, while 2025 ranks second with 3,832 deaths.
