Costa message from Tirana: Accelerate the fight against corruption and organized

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, visited Tirana today, as part of his Balkan tour.

From the joint conference with Prime Minister Rama, Costa said that Albania must strengthen efforts in the fight against corruption and organized crime.

The Head of the EC emphasized that the rule of law and the maintenance of an independent judiciary are the main foundations of the region.

"Reforms rather than conditions imposed by the EU are in fact choices by you to build strong democratic institutions. This means a continued commitment to the rule of law and the preservation of an independent judiciary and legislature, which are the main foundations for EU membership."

"I encourage you to accelerate your efforts to fight corruption and organized crime. The EU is the most reliable partner of the Balkans and is the main investor of the Western Balkans, as well as of Albania, and the most important trading partner," Costa said.
