Greece to ban social media for children under 15 by 2027

Greece will ban access to social media for children under the age of 15 from January 1, 2027, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Wednesday, citing rising anxiety, sleep problems and the problematic design of online platforms.

In a video message to young people, Mitsotakis said that children who spend long hours in front of screens do not allow their minds to rest and face increasing pressure from constant comparisons and online comments.

"We have decided to proceed with a difficult but necessary measure: to ban access to social media for children under 15," Mitsotakis said in a video posted on TikTok.

"Greece is among the first countries in the world to adopt such a measure," he said, adding that he would put pressure on the European Union to follow suit.

Australia in December became the first country in the world to require TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and other major sites to remove accounts of people under the age of 16, or face heavy fines.

Indonesia began enforcing a social media ban on users under the age of 16 in March and has already sent summons letters to Google and Meta for failing to comply with the law.

Austria announced last month that it would soon ban social media for children up to the age of 14, with a plan to introduce a new law “as early as the summer.” Spain and Denmark have also announced their intention to introduce a digital age of majority for social networks.
