China, Iran and several Arab states have condemned the statement by an Israeli minister who said dropping a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip was an option in the Israel-Hamas war, calling the stance a threat to the world.

At Monday's United Nations conference aimed at establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, many ambassadors condemned and criticized statements made by Israel's Heritage Minister Amihai Eliyahu, who later called his statements "metaphorical". Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly rejected his statements and suspended him from government meetings.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied that it has nuclear capabilities. The country is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, and a former nuclear reactor worker spent 18 years in prison after publishing details and photographs of Israel's suspected nuclear arsenal in a British newspaper in 1986.

China's deputy ambassador to the UN, Geng Shuang, said Beijing was "shocked" and described the statements as "extremely irresponsible" that should be immediately condemned.

He called on Israeli officials to respond to the statement and join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Geng said China is willing to join other countries to work on establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.

UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu, who opened the conference, did not mention Israel. But, she said that "any threat to use nuclear weapons is unacceptable"./ REL
