Poland began building a fence along its border with Belarus to block the entry of illegal immigrants, foreign media report .

The fence will be five and a half meters high, 186 kilometers long and will cost 350 million euros to build, the Polish Border Guard agency announced.

Poland and Belarus share a border of 418 km. A spokeswoman for the border guard, Captain Krystyna Jakimik-Jarosz, declined to specify the location of the construction sites, arguing that "Belarusian services are simply waiting for this to send groups of migrants there, so for security reasons we do not specify the exact locations."

The new fence will be equipped with cameras and motion detectors, among others, to help border guards prevent smuggling, Jakimik-Jarosz said.
