Iran breaks off negotiations with the US, escalating tension in the Middle East

Iran has suspended talks with the United States in protest at the expansion of the Israeli military offensive in Lebanon, Iranian government media reported on Monday.

According to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, the Iranian negotiating team will temporarily suspend "talks and the exchange of documents through intermediaries" due to Israel's continued military actions in Lebanon.

"Due to the continuation of the Zionist regime's actions in Lebanon and given that the situation in Lebanon was one of the preconditions for the ceasefire, while this ceasefire has already been violated on all fronts, the Iranian negotiating team will suspend the talks," Tasnim quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, the weekend and Monday were accompanied by mutual attacks between US forces and Iran, in what is considered the latest escalation of violence despite the ceasefire reached in early April.

Tasnim also reported that the Iranian government is considering completely closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping lanes, through which about a fifth of global oil supplies passed before the war. According to the report, this measure would be aimed at punishing Israel and its supporters.

So far, the Iranian government has not made an official statement on these developments, although official positions are often broadcast through state or pro-government media.

On the other hand, US officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The war between the US, Israel and Iran began on February 28 and has so far caused thousands of casualties, mainly in Iran and Lebanon, and left 13 US military personnel dead. The conflict has also affected global energy markets, causing oil prices to rise sharply after Iran reacted to developments in the region.
