NATO increases security at its air base in Germany

Security at an air base in western Germany has been increased due to a "potential threat", the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said.

NATO said it has ordered all non-essential staff to return home as a precautionary measure.

The air base in Geilenkirchen, near the border with the Netherlands, is home to surveillance aircraft of NATO's Airborne Warning and Control Systems, known as AWACS.

In its post on the social network X on Thursday night, NATO's AWACS fleet said that "we have raised the level of security", but did not explain the nature of the potential threat.

She said that her operations "continue according to plan".

The base in Geilenkirchen said on Friday that it had nothing to add to that statement and that "the situation is unchanged for now".

German news agency DPA said one of its reporters saw police cars at the airbase. Police confirmed their presence at the base Thursday night, but did not provide details Friday morning.

Last week, a major German air force base near Cologne was shut down for several hours over fears its water supply had been contaminated. An investigation found no evidence of contamination.

These incidents occurred at a time of fear about the potential vulnerability of infrastructure to Russian sabotage attempts.

On Thursday, prosecutors in Flensburg, northern Germany, said they were investigating suspicions of espionage aimed at sabotage, without explaining who might be behind it./ REL
