A solar storm will hit the Earth, experts: It could happen this week

Experts have predicted that a solar storm will hit the Earth this month. Physicists say the storm is likely to occur in the next two weeks.

These forecasts were made based on data collected by NASA and the US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NOAA has predicted that there is an 80 percent chance the storm will hit as soon as today. The chances of the storm hitting the UK are 20 per cent.

However, Dr Tamitha Skov, a space weather physicist, says the storm is already here.

A solar flare, also known as a massive coronary injection (CME), is very common and not everyone travels to Earth, but when they do - they have the power to be disruptive.

People around the world may be able to see the Aurora, a light show that is often seen in high latitude areas, this is expected to be seen further towards the equator during the storm.

Coronary mass (CME) explosions are powerful plasma explosions on the surface of the Sun. Billions of tons of material rise from the surface and can explode away from the Sun with the force of about 20 million nuclear explosions.
