"Independence of Republika Srpska and unification with Serbia", EUFOR takes over the "monitoring" of the situation in Bosnia

"Independence of Republika Srpska and unification with Serbia", EUFOR

The European Union's military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina said it saw no danger to the security situation in the country, despite the tensions caused by the leader of the Bosnian Serbs, Milorad Dodik, who constantly threatens that the Serbian entity will seek independence and to join neighboring Serbia.

Dodik - who is sanctioned by the United States and Britain on suspicion of attempts to destabilize the state and corruption - has repeatedly threatened to seek independence for Republika Srpska if the central government of Bosnia, which is the legal owner of state assets , does not transfer ownership of state assets to the Serbian entity.

On April 23, Dodik vowed to seek unification with Serbia if the issue is not decided in Republika Srpska's favor and warned that Republika Srpska's police would patrol the borders with Bosnia's other entity, the Bosniak-Croat Federation. EU mission spokeswoman Emer Kelly told Radio Free Europe on April 26 that Operation Althea is closely monitoring political and security developments.

"EUFOR's Althea has a nationwide presence and is conducting routine patrols throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to reassure all communities of our presence and increase situational preparedness," Kelly said.

She added that the mission is continuing to proactively support Bosnia's partner institutions to provide a safe environment in the country and that they will continue to cooperate and maintain contact with local authorities through official channels.

Under the 1995 Dayton Accords, which ended the war in Bosnia, an administrative system was created whereby Bosnia remains divided between the Republika Srpska and the Bosnian-Croat Federation, linked by a weak central government.

Dodik is trying to separate the Serbian entity's army, police and tax administration from the central government, actions that are in violation of the Dayton Agreement. Operation Althea, officially known as the European Union Force Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR), was established in 2004, after the Stabilization Force (SFOR), the Implementation Force (IFOR) and the United Nations Defense Force had previously operated in the country. United Nations (UNPROFOR). EUFOR is responsible for implementing the military part of the Dayton Agreement and ensuring peace. EUFOR's mandate, which includes the use of force, was extended for a year last fall by the UN Security Council.
