Zelenskyy: Cooperation with the US should be constructive

Following US President Donald Trump's harsh criticism of Ukraine's leader on Wednesday, the latter said he was preparing for a meeting on Thursday with Mr. Trump's envoy in Kiev to work toward "a lasting peace" with Russia.

" It is essential for us that our meeting and our overall cooperation with the United States be constructive ," Mr. Zelenskyy said in his evening address to the nation.

" Together with the United States and Europe, peace can be more secure and that is our goal ," he added.

On Wednesday, President Trump and President Zelenskyy traded accusations at a distance. The US president called Mr. Zelenskyy an "unelected dictator" while the Ukrainian leader accused Mr. Trump of living in a "disinformation space" influenced by Russia.

As the fate of the three-year-old Russia-Ukraine war remains unclear, Mr. Zelesky fears that the American leader is trying to end the Russian attack, on terms more favorable to Moscow than Kiev. President Trump also accused Zelenskyy of refusing to hold elections in Ukraine, which were scheduled to be held in April 2024 but were postponed due to the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022.

President Trump called Mr. Zelensky a "modestly successful comedian" who managed to convince the United States to spend $350 billion to enter, as he put it, "a war that could not be won, that should never have been started in the first place, and that now could not be won without the United States and Donald Trump."

The American leader, who refused last year during a political debate to say whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war, said that "the only thing Zelesky was good at was manipulating former US President Joe Biden for more military aid."

" I love Ukraine ," said President Trump, "but Zelensky has done a terrible job, his country has been destroyed and millions have died needlessly - and so it will continue..."

President Trump's criticism of Mr. Zelensky came after the Ukrainian leader expressed his anger at Kiev's exclusion from high-level US-Russia diplomatic talks, which were held in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

After more than four hours of talks, Washington and Moscow said they had agreed to meet again soon to determine how to end the war. They also agreed to restore normal diplomatic missions and increase cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including the economy./ VOA
