Attempted murder of Albanian wanted in Albania, plea bargain granted in Belgium

Attempted murder of Albanian wanted in Albania, plea bargain granted in Belgium

The Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor's office on Friday requested prison sentences of 2 and 10 years against three people suspected of being involved in a shooting in Asse in May 2023. According to the public prosecutor's office, the shooting was a failed assassination attempt in the Albanian environment and the target, a 44-year-old Albanian, was himself wanted for murder.

The shooting took place on the night of May 6-7 in Frans Thirrystraat in Zellik, a sub-municipality of Asses. At least 8 bullet holes were found in the house and car at the scene, and police recovered 10 shell casings of various calibers. Witnesses, on the other hand, said they saw two people put a third injured man into a vehicle and run away.

"Investigations showed that the three of them were actually targeting the resident of a building on Frans Thirrystraat, a 44-year-old Albanian who was wanted for a murder in Albania. However, one of the attackers was injured, while the 44-year-old Albanian remained unharmed and fled the country immediately after the incident," the public prosecutor's office said.

The vehicle in which the three attackers fled from Zellik was found burned later that morning in Oudenaarde. According to the public prosecutor's office, the perpetrators fled Oudenaarde in a Porsche Cayenne with Romanian license plates. That vehicle can be linked to P. and D., two Romanian men, through telephone inquiries and searches in Germany, among other things.

"The injured attacker was brought to a Dutch hospital in a Porsche Cayenne in the hours after the incident and can be identified as 37-year-old C. However, he disappeared without a trace even after his stay in hospital."

The public prosecutor's office is now prosecuting C. for attempted murder and has requested a 10-year prison sentence for him. A 2-year prison sentence was requested against P. and D., who are said to have received the three attackers alone in Oudenaarde.
