Israeli strikes kill 20 people in Gaza, including a journalist

The Israeli military carried out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, killing at least 20 Palestinians in the Palestinian enclave, including a local journalist and a senior rescue service official, according to health authorities.

Israel carried out separate strikes on Khan Yunis in the south, Jabalia in the north and Nuseirat in central Gaza, according to medics. In Jabalia, medics said journalist Hassan Majdi Abu Warda and several members of his family were killed in an airstrike that hit his home on Sunday morning.

Another airstrike in Nuseirat killed Ashraf Abu Nar, a senior civil emergency service official in the territory, and his wife in their home, medics added. The Israeli military has not yet commented on Sunday's attacks.

The number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the war in 2023 has risen to 20, according to the Gaza government office, which is run by Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and EU. Israel is continuing its military offensive and has so far allowed minimal aid into the Palestinian territory.

Gaza has been under an Israeli blockade for nearly three months, and experts warn that many of its 2 million residents are at high risk of extreme hunger. Even the United States, Israel's biggest backer, has expressed concern about the hunger crisis.

Israel has said it will continue its attacks until Hamas releases all 58 remaining Israeli hostages and disarms. Less than half of the hostages still in Gaza are believed to be alive.

The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages. Israel says 58 hostages remain in Gaza, although about 35 are believed to be dead.

Since then, Israel's war has killed more than 53,000 people in Gaza, many of them women and children, according to Palestinian health officials.
