Albanian actress Irene Papas, an icon of the world stage, has passed away

 

The actress of Albanian origin, Irene Papas, has passed away at the age of 96.

Papas is known for her roles in cinemas and world stages, and especially in Greece where she played important roles in both theater and cinema, mainly works of ancient tragedy.

Irene Papas, real name Irini Lelekou, was born in September 1926 in Corinth. At the age of 15, Irene began her path towards acting, working as a radio producer, singer and dancer.

At the age of 18, she married the writer Alki Papa, but their marriage did not last long.

In her first steps on the stage, she took part in the productions of the National Theatre. Her talent and performances in ancient tragedies such as "Medea" and "Elektra" quickly made her famous.
