Termination of relations with Iran, NATO: We support Albania

NATO has reacted after the decision of the Albanian government to cut off relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In a statement , NATO writes that they support Albania's decision and that they condemn malicious cyber activity. Furthermore, NATO writes that together with the allies they support Albania to face and repel such activities.

NATO calls on all states to respect international commitments to support a norms-based approach to cyberspace.

NATO statement:

We stand in solidarity with Albania following the latest cyber attack on its national information infrastructure. The Allies accept the statements of Albania and other Allies that attribute responsibility for the cyber attack to the Government of Iran. We strongly condemn such malicious cyber activities designed to destabilize and harm the security of an ally and disrupt the daily lives of citizens. NATO and allies support Albania in strengthening its cyber defense capabilities to withstand and repel such malicious cyber activities in the future.

Malicious actors seek to degrade our critical infrastructure, interfere with our government services, extract intelligence, steal intellectual property, and disrupt our military activities. Allies are committed to protecting their critical infrastructure, building resilience and strengthening their cyber defenses. We will continue to enhance our defenses against such malicious cyber activities in the future and support each other to deter, protect and counter the full spectrum of cyber threats, including considering possible collective responses.

We promote a free, open, peaceful and secure cyberspace. We pursue efforts to increase stability and reduce the risks of conflict by promoting respect for international law and the voluntary norms of responsible state behavior in cyberspace, as recognized by all members of the United Nations. We call on all states to honor their international commitments to support a norms-based approach to cyberspace.
