On the list of nominees for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, two women with special ties to Albanians have attracted international attention.

Specifically, Francesca Albanese, United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, and Feride Rushiti, a well-known activist from Kosovo and founder of the Center for the Rehabilitation of Torture Victims.

As for Francesca Albanese, although her surname “Albanese” means “Albanian” in Italian, she is Italian, born in Ariano Irpino. She has become one of the most powerful voices in defense of Palestinian rights, publicly denouncing human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank. Albanese is the first UN official to be sanctioned by the US for her positions on Israel, which has further raised her international profile.

Feride Rushiti, known for her work defending the rights of victims of sexual violence during the Kosovo war, is one of the most respected figures in the field of transitional justice in the Balkans. She founded the Center for the Rehabilitation of Torture Victims, which has helped thousands of women and men who have survived the trauma of war.

Her nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is a recognition of her efforts to restore dignity and justice for those who have suffered in silence.
