Today marks 22 years since the beginning of NATO airstrikes against police forces in Serbia and Montenegro. At 20:00 on 24 March 1999, NATO aircraft dropped the first bombs. The attacks lasted 78 days.

The bombing began after numerous actions by Serbian forces, burns and mass evictions in 1998 and after the failure of a peace agreement with Belgrade.

NATO attacks on Serb forces ceased on June 10, 1999, after the then President of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic, agreed to withdraw troops from Kosovo.

The order to launch the bombing campaign was given by US President Bill Clinton. He stated at the time that he had ordered the Atlantic Alliance to launch a military operation as the only way to end the fighting in Kosovo.

"We and the NATO Alliance have made every effort in order to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict in Kosovo. But President Milosevic, who in the recent past led to terrible wars in Croatia and Bosnia, has decided in favor of aggression rather than peace " , stated Clinton.
