"My mom told me. I've never read online, so I don't really care," he explained.

In fact, the change in appearance is due to a 2013 accident in which Efron said he broke his jaw after slipping into a puddle of water near the entrance to his home. He also suffered a cut in the fall that required stitches.

Efron revealed on Tuesday that the incident nearly killed him.

"It was something very bad. I almost died, but I'm fine," he explained.

Earlier this month, Efron spoke more about the effect of the injury on his face to Men's Health, explaining that while the muscles of mastication along with the face must work "like a symphony" with the rest of the facial muscles, the injury changed this in him.
