Knife attack at a school in France, a teacher is killed

A teacher has been killed and two others seriously injured in a knife attack at a school in France, French officials said.

France's interior minister, Gerald Darmanin, said the attack took place at Gambetta high school in the northern city of Arras.

Local officials announced that the attacker has been arrested.

The attacker shouted in Arabic "Allahu Akbar", or in Albanian "God is the greatest" during the attack, police told the AFP news agency.

The attacker is believed to be in his 20s.

French broadcaster BFMTV reported that the attacker's brother has also been detained by police.

The murdered teacher was a French language teacher, while the physical education teacher was injured by stabbing.

Police said they have the situation under control.

Such attacks on schools are rare in France. The motives behind the attack are still unclear, but the attack comes at a time when tensions around the world are high following a weekend attack by Hamas in southern Israel and the Israeli army's response in Gaza, which killed hundreds. civilians on both sides.

France on Thursday ordered local authorities to ban all pro-Palestinian protests, fearing anti-Semitic attacks following the Hamas attack.

France is the country with the third largest Jewish population in the world after Israel and the United States, as well as the largest Muslim population in Western Europe.
