Veliaj's arrest, Teliti: The legal deadline of 3 months has passed, Tirana must have a new elected mayor

Veliaj's arrest, Teliti: The legal deadline of 3 months has passed, Tirana

The Deputy Mayor of Tirana Municipal Council, Dorian Teliti, requested an urgent council meeting to discuss the dismissal of Erion Veliaj, who has been in prison since February 10.

Speaking at MCN, Teliti said that the legal deadline of three months of absence has passed, which makes it possible to initiate dismissal procedures and pave the way for the election of a new mayor of Tirana, through the vote of the citizens.

According to him, the municipality is currently being run illegitimately by appointees rather than by an elected representative.

" Based on the law on local self-government, after the continuous absence of the Mayor of Tirana for more than three months, the Municipal Council has the right to consider and vote for his dismissal. This situation has been updated by the arrest of Erion Veliaj on February 10, which means that on May 10, the legal conditions were met to discuss his replacement.

The opposition demands that the Municipal Council immediately convene in a special session to decide whether to dismiss Erion Veliaj from the position of mayor and to pave the way for new elections for the Municipality of Tirana.

The main argument is that currently the Municipality of Tirana is being led not by an elected mayor, but by his appointed deputies, in a manner not based on civic legitimacy. According to the opposition, this situation is illegitimate, immoral and undermines the democratic functioning of the institution.

Despite the fact that the opposition does not have the numbers to secure Veliaj's dismissal, it is requested that the motion be discussed and put to a vote in accordance with the law and public transparency. The final decision will be made by a majority of the 61 municipal councilors, including those in the majority.

"For the opposition, this initiative is not a political game, but a legitimate demand that the citizens of Tirana have a new mayor elected by vote, who will lead the Municipality until the end of the current mandate in 2027 ," said Teliti.
