Nicaragua's democracy is collapsing, Daniel Ortega's opponents are

Nicaragua's already fragile democracy is fast turning into a dictatorship, foreign media report . President Daniel Ortega has used the power of the police and justice institutions to crack down on his political opponents and citizens who oppose his regime.

At least 13 opposition leaders have been arrested and charged with so-called "national security" violations, which human rights groups say is a clear sign that the country's leader is doing his best to eliminate and suppress any competition.

This is because the general elections will be held on November 7, where Ortega hopes to secure his fourth consecutive term as president. Four of the banned opposition figures are presidential candidates accused of crimes. So they are likely to disqualify them from competing against Ortega.
