Hamas and Islamic Jihad claim responsibility for the explosion in Tel Aviv

The armed groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad have claimed responsibility for a bomb explosion near a synagogue in Tel Aviv, which was described as a terrorist attack by Israeli police and Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency.

Hamas has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

A man carrying the bomb was killed and a bystander was wounded in the incident late Sunday, according to Israeli police.

Israeli government spokesman David Mencer said the man was carrying a backpack filled with explosives, which exploded "before he reached a place where there were more people."

In a joint media release, the two Palestinian militant groups said their "martyrdom operations" inside Israel will continue as long as "the massacres and murderous policies by the occupier continue," referring to Israel's war in the Gaza Strip and the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on July 31 in Tehran.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh's murder, but neither has it denied it.

The war in Gaza began on October 7 last year, when Hamas militants swept into southern Israel and killed around 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 250 others, according to Israeli officials.

As a result of the Israeli war, parts of the Gaza Strip have been leveled and at least 40,000 people have been killed, according to health authorities in the enclave.

The blast in Tel Aviv on Sunday came hours after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Tel Aviv to push for a ceasefire in Gaza to end the now 10-month war between Israel and Hamas.

Calls for a ceasefire have increased recently, due to fears of the situation escalating into a wider regional war.

Iran has threatened to take revenge against Israel for the murder of Haniyeh./ REL
