Russia's state-owned oil company Rosneft announced on Friday that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and German businessman Matthias Warnig were leaving the company's board of directors.
The European Parliament on Thursday called for Mr Schroeder, now 78, to be blacklisted if he did not resign from the board of Rosneft, a move aimed at discouraging him from taking over. Russian company Gazprom, a newly announced appointment.
Germany closed Mr Schroeder's office on Wednesday, at the expense of taxpayers, following public outrage over his continued involvement in Russia's energy industry, despite Russia's attack on Ukraine and his refusal to publicly denounce President Vladimir Putin, whom he considers a personal friend.
Rosneft said in a statement that it "supports the decisions (of Mr Schroeder and Mr Warnig) and thanks them for their continued support".
Mr. Schroeder, Chancellor of Germany from 1998-2005, has been a strong supporter of the Nord Stream pipeline, which supplies Germany with gas from Russia, and has been on the board of Rosneft since 2017.
Six different sources told the Reuters news agency on Thursday that five more Rosneft foreign vice presidents had left, shortly before the latest EU sanctions on Russia took effect on May 15.
Mr Schroeder did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters news agency failed to contact Mr Warnig.
Mr. Schroeder chairs the Nord Stream shareholder committee, which manages the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which runs from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea, and chairs the board of directors of Nord Stream 2, a second pipeline whose operation was suspended by Germany after Russia launched an attack on Ukraine./VOA
