Gennaro Gattuso is expected to be the new Italy coach

Italy is ready to appoint its former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as its new coach to replace the recently sacked Luciano Spalletti, Gianluigi Buffon, head of the delegation with the Italian football federation (FIGC), said on Saturday.

"We have been working, now we are waiting for the final details," Buffon said, speaking at the European Under-21 Championship. "The president and the entire federation have had a busy few days, but I think in the end we made the best choice."

Spalletti's dismissal came after less than two years in charge, taking charge for the last time in the 2-0 win over Moldova, a day after he announced his dismissal following a 3-0 defeat to Norway in Italy's opening World Cup qualifier.
