EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos is facing fresh allegations that she collaborated with the Yugoslav secret police in the 1980s, after a member of the European Parliament claimed to have new evidence, Politico reports .

"The allegations, which emerged during the Slovenian commissioner's confirmation hearing in Parliament in 2024 and which Kos later denied, have resurfaced ahead of Slovenia's elections on March 22 with the support of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's own party.

Slovenian MEP Romana Tomc, vice-chair of the centre-right European People's Party - the largest group in Parliament - said on Thursday that she had written to the Commission claiming there was new evidence that Kos collaborated with Yugoslavia's spy agency and demanding an investigation , the article said.

Tomc told POLITICO that Kos was not being honest when he "claimed that he did not cooperate with the secret service... We need to do something with this information."

An EPP spokesperson said: "Romana Tomc has kept the EPP Group closely informed about the latest revelations regarding Commissioner Marta Kos. The Group will examine the matter carefully. For the time being, we note that Commissioner Kos has not denied these new revelations. The ball is now in her court."

Kos did not respond to POLITICO's repeated requests for comment. But a Commission official said Kos "went through an extensive and thorough vetting process" to become a commissioner, adding that Parliament "approved Commissioner Kos's appointment in the same process as all 27 Commissioners."

"An official close to the commissioner's office, who was granted anonymity to speak about the sensitive allegations, told POLITICO: 'She [Kos] is very aware that political opponents will use these kinds of things to score points in the Slovenian elections, but she is fully focused on her job as enlargement commissioner.'"

Kos will appear before Parliament's foreign affairs committee on Monday to discuss the expansion and is also expected to face questions about the allegations.

In the Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, Tomc presented a book by Slovenian author Igor Omerza, showing documents that, according to them, proved that Kos collaborated with the Yugoslav espionage agency , "the article concludes.

We recall that the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has openly come out in defense of the Prime Minister during her statements in Tirana, regarding the electoral massacre of May 11, which, according to her, were free and fair elections.

This statement brought many reactions, reminding Ms. Kos that the electoral farce of May 11 is written in black and white by the reports of the OSCE/ODIHR and the European Commission, which condemn state interference in the elections, the use of state resources, over 4 thousand legal violations for the inaugurations prohibited 6 months before the elections, the criminal system of patronage, as well as the intervention of criminal gangs, by selecting their candidates in these elections.
