Russia has expelled the US Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Moscow, Bart Gorman, according to Russia's state-run RIA news agency.

The news was also confirmed by the United States, calling the move one more step towards escalating the conflict.

As we have reported, Russia has expelled US Deputy Ambassador Bart Gorman, the second highest-ranking official at the embassy - but Moscow has not yet said why.

"We call on Russia to end the unfounded expulsion of US diplomats and staff and to work productively to rebuild our missions, " the State Department said in a statement.

"Now more than ever, it is critical that our countries have the necessary diplomatic staff to facilitate communication between our governments. "
