Eurostat data show that residence permits that Germany has issued to Albanian citizens have increased significantly since 2018. In that year over 10 thousand Albanian citizens were provided with permits to live and work in the largest economy in Europe. In 2019, their number exceeded 12 thousand. In 2020, despite pandemics and severe restrictions on movement, about 8,300 residence permits were issued.

In previous years, Germany did not prioritize the approach of Albanian citizens. For example, in 2011, the first year when visas were abolished for movement in EU countries, Germany issued only 350 residence permits for Albanian citizens.

In total, since 2008, when INSTAT reports the data, Germany has given a total of 48.5 thousand ALL, but 64% of them were given only in the period 2018-2020. In 2020, Germany for the first time was ranked as the second country for permits granted to Albanian citizens, with 22% of the total, after Italy with 34% and leaving behind Greece, with 20.6%. Historically, Italy and Greece have been the two most hospitable countries for Albanians who want to live and work abroad.

More detailed data on citizens who have received residence permits for family reasons, show that in 2019-2020, they are leaving mainly as families, while almost 40% of permits were granted to children under 14 years.

Germany, which is facing restrictions in the domestic labor market, is attracting citizens from all over the world, including Albanians, in recent years. Specialties such as doctors, nurses, information technology specialists are among the most sought after professions in Germany.

700 thousand Albanians have fled to EU countries since 2008

From 2008 to 2020, there are about 700 thousand Albanian citizens who have received a residence permit in one of the countries of the European Union, according to Eurostat.

The highest number of residence permits was issued in the period 2008-2009, with 97.3 thousand and 83.9 thousand, respectively, as a result of high emigration in the early 2000s. Then the influx came down, dropping to about 30 thousand per year 2013. After this period, the revival of the immigration cycle, which is shown by the significant increase in asylum applications brought another increase in residence permits, which culminated in 2019, with about 60.4 thousand of them./ Monitor
