The Pashtrik-Morinë protected area will be declared a Category IV National

The Pashtrik-Morinë protected area, part of Kukës Prefecture, will be declared a Category IV National Park.

Currently, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment has published a plan for this initiative accompanied by a list of documents as well as arguments on why this area will pass to this status after the Prefect's proposal.

"Pashtriku is a mountain found in Kosovo and Albania, with a height of 1,986 meters. Along this mountain passes the White Drin River in Kosovo. Two thirds of the mountain belong to Albania. Pashtriku is located in the north-east of Albania, while the village of Krumë is located next to it. The rest, i.e. a third of the mountain is in Kosovo and is located in the south-western part of Kosovo, which is also a natural park.

This initiative was undertaken in 2016 with the idea of declaring both sides of the border as a cross-border natural park," the document states.

This territory connects three important ecological areas in Albania, such as the National Park "Alpet e Albania", the Nayror Park "Munella" and the Nature Park "Korab - Koritnik".

This area represents a great wealth of flora and fauna that defines it, which are widely presented in the documents of the authorities, even Pashtriku fulfills the necessary criteria that make it possible to classify it in the National Park category.

These criteria are: a) to have a high diversity of species and/or habitats (in the area of Pashtrik there are oak forests, beech forests, black pine and alpine pastures, which are shelters for large mammals); b) In this area there are many endemic plants and species in danger of extinction which are reflected in the study; c) Also, the Pashtrik area has a rich cultural and historical heritage; d) The area has a high risk of being threatened by the interventions of human activities such as mining and other economic activities that may harm these species.

"Both at the global level through the Biodiversity Convention and at the European level, through the post 2020 strategy for biodiversity, the commitment has been made that by 2030 the surface of the country's protected areas will reach 30% of the country's territory. Various studies carried out over the years in our country have identified a number of areas and natural ecosystems of different typologies (mountainous, wetlands, marine), which, in terms of their nature and biodiversity values, can be declared environmentally protected areas. . Such an area also constitutes the natural ecosystem of the Pashtrik - Morin area," says the document published by the Ministry./MONITOR
