The former Minister of Defense in North Macedonia is appointed Deputy Secretary

The former Minister of Defense of North Macedonia, Radmilla Shekerinska, has been appointed Deputy Secretary General of NATO on Tuesday, the military alliance announced.

NATO said the alliance's chief, Mark Rutte, decided to appoint Shekerinska as the next deputy secretary.

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Radmila Shekerinska as Deputy General Secretary. "She really believes in NATO, she knows the work it takes to be part of the alliance, and what it means to be a full member," said Rutte.

Shekerinska will officially take up her new position at the end of this year.

She has served in the past as Deputy Minister for European Integration and Minister of Defense of Macedonia, including during the time when her country joined the NATO alliance in 2020.

Shekerinska will replace acting Deputy Secretary General Boris Ruge, who took the position on an interim basis earlier this fall after then-Deputy Secretary Mircea Geoana announced he would run for president of Romania.

Several NATO officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Radio Free Europe that there was a strong desire for the position to be filled by someone from Central and Eastern Europe and for a woman.

Other candidates included Bulgaria's former foreign minister Maria Gabriel, Croatia's former president Kollinda Grabar-Kitarovic, and Olivera Injac, who was Montenegro's defense minister from 2020 to 2022.

Shekerinska will be the highest NATO official from the Western Balkans region, outside the European Union. Currently, she is the vice-president of the Party of European Socialists.

The main role of the deputy secretary general is to replace the head and chair the meetings of the 32 ambassadors in the North-Atlantic Council twice a week, or in any urgent meeting, including the NATO-Ukraine Council./REL
